Pricing rules of thumb
  • Materials cost × 2 = wholesale price (minimum floor — don't sell at retail for this)
  • 3–4× Materials cost × 3–4 = Etsy retail price target. The extra multiple covers labour, platform fees, overhead, and margin.
  • 40%+ Target at least 40% profit margin after all fees AND after paying yourself for your time. Below 30% is a warning sign.
  • 10–12% Etsy takes roughly 10–12% of revenue in fees on a standard sale (no Offsite Ads). Budget for it before you price.
  • 25–27% Total fee burden on an Offsite Ads sale. If your margin is under 30%, an Offsite Ads sale can wipe out your profit.
Signs you may be underpriced
  • Your profit margin is under 30% after including the cost of your time
  • You haven't accounted for Offsite Ads — a single boosted sale at 15% can flip a thin margin negative
  • Your "cost" only includes materials, not the time it took to make the item
  • You're charging the same for shipping as your label cost — you're eating the fees Etsy applies to shipping revenue
  • You haven't raised prices since Etsy increased its transaction fee from 5% to 6.5% in April 2022
  • Your profit disappears on orders with gift wrap because you haven't factored in the fee base it adds

Before you list — quick checklist
  • Calculated true cost including materials and your time
  • Accounted for shipping label cost (not just what the buyer pays)
  • Checked what Offsite Ads would do to this margin
  • Margin is 40%+ after all costs
  • Price covers 10–12% standard fee burden before you see a dollar
